Hindsight is a notification history app for Android made by Weiting Chen. This policy explains what the app and this website do with your information.
The short version: the app keeps your notification history on your phone and has no way to send it anywhere. It has no internet permission, no account, no analytics and no ads. We never see your data.
What the app stores on your phone
When you give Hindsight notification access, it saves the notifications your phone receives:
- The notification itself: the app it came from, its title and text, and when it arrived.
- For chats: the conversation name, the sender's name and each message.
- Reminders you set on a notification, and when they're due.
- Settings: how long to keep history, apps you've paused, snooze times, language and appearance.
To show app icons and let you pause apps, Hindsight looks at the list of apps installed on your phone. That list is used on the device only and is not saved.
Nothing leaves your phone
Hindsight does not have Android's internet permission, so it cannot connect to any server, ours or anyone else's. The app is built to fail if any part of it tries to add that permission. Its data is also excluded from Android cloud backup and device-to-device transfer.
This means we cannot see, recover or delete your history for you. It exists only on your phone.
How long it's kept
Notifications are deleted automatically once they're older than the period you choose: 24 hours on the free version, and up to a year with Pro. Anything with a pending reminder is kept until the reminder is done. You can delete a conversation, everything from one app, or all history at any time in the app. Uninstalling the app deletes everything.
Exports
With Pro, you can export your history as a CSV file. The file is saved where you choose, and Hindsight never uploads it. The file is not encrypted, so anyone who opens it can read the messages in it; once you share it, it's covered by the privacy terms of wherever you send it.
Purchases
Hindsight Pro is a one-time purchase through Google Play. Google handles the payment under the Google Privacy Policy. We never receive your card details, and the app only learns from Google Play whether Pro has been bought.
Crash reports
Hindsight does not send crash reports. If you've chosen, in your phone's own settings, to share usage and diagnostics with Google, Google may give developers anonymous crash statistics under its own policy. That choice is made in Android, not in Hindsight.
This website
hindsight.page is a static site hosted on Firebase Hosting, which logs requests (including network addresses) for operational purposes under Google's privacy terms. The site counts page views and clicks on the Google Play button with Umami, an open-source analytics tool that we host ourselves. It sets no cookies, stores no network addresses, and cannot follow you to other sites; it records the page, the referrer, your browser and country, and nothing that identifies you. This applies to the website only; the app sends nothing.
Children
Hindsight is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect information from children.
Your rights
Because your data never leaves your phone, you are always in control of it: you can view, export and delete it in the app. We hold no personal data about app users. Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or the CCPA; if you have a question, write to us.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top of this page will move. If the app ever needed to send data off your phone, it would need a new permission that Android and Google Play show you before you update.
